My thoughts on mining barges

I am no expert at Eve by any means, I have only been playing collectively for 3 months. However, I do research things as much as I can, especially in this game. These are my thoughts after researching the mining rigs and seeing all the questions asked on the butt-load of posts and articles that I read. I am not going to get in-depth and number crunching as this is for the noob gamer that wants to know which rig is better. I have flown and mined in the Procurer and the Retriever so I am familiar with them. All information was found at the Eve University Wiki  and Eve Online Ships and my personal experiences.

The O.R.E. Mining Barges

The Covetor:

O.R.E. Covetor

Mining Barge bonuses:

  • 5% bonus to Strip Miner and Ice Harvester range
  • 2% reduction in Strip Miner and Ice Harvester duration

Role Bonus:

  • 25% reduction in Strip Miner and Ice Harvester duration and activation cost

This ship has a smaller hold capacity, 350 m3  but it mines 10-20% faster than the others 2 barges. You trade the capacity for the quicker mining yields. You also have to be more aware of your surroundings because it’s defenses are less and is more easily destroyed by suicide gankers. Use this if you are in a safe area and have a quick drop-off set up.

My thoughts on this ship: I would not have much use for it at this time. I do not have a 2nd account with an orca or ship to retrieve the cargo containers that I would need to jettison to keep mining continuously. I think the speed bonus would be negated heavily by the travel time to warp, dock & drop, and warp back. This would have more value with a alt, friend, or corporation where you have someone to pick up for you.

The Procurer:

O.R.E. Procurer

Mining Barge bonuses:

  • 5% bonus to ship shield hitpoints
  • 2% reduction in Strip Miner and Ice Harvester duration

Role Bonus:

  • 50% bonus to drone damage and hitpoints

This ship has a medium sized hold capacity of 12,000 m3  but the Procurer mines slower than the Covetor. The big bonus to this ship is it’s defenses. It is the tankier of the 3 and then the drone bonus allows you to protect yourself better than the other 2 barges. Use this for solo mining and mining in more dangerous areas.

My thoughts on this ship: This is my favorite of the 3 mining barges. I don’t worry as much about suicide gankers and don’t worry about the rats in the belts. The drones do a great job protecting me and the combination of my defense and drones helps keep the gankers from targeting me. For newer players still learning the game, I highly suggest the Procurer as your first mining barge.

The Retriever:

Mining Barge bonuses:

  • 5% bonus to Strip Miner and Ice Harvester range

    O.R.E Retriever
  • 2% reduction in Strip Miner and Ice Harvester duration

Role Bonus:

  • 25% reduction in Strip Miner and Ice Harvester duration and activation cost

This is the largest of the barges and has the largest hold as well. The hold has a capacity of 22,000 m3  so you have to make less drops which increases your overall mining yield. However, like the Covetor, it is not very tanky and is more easily to destroy by suicide gankers.

My thoughts on this ship: I like the large ore hold but would only use it in safe areas where I am not worried as much about suicide gankers. I would stay in high-sec while using the Retriever and keep my eyes open for strange ships. It is great to use close to home in a safe and secure region.
